iPhone Questions -- Scrubbing and Flicking

Hi Guys,
So I have my iPhone 4 all set up and it works beautifully. I've used it for about three months and have had no issues with it.
Today, I initialized VoiceOver on a friend's iPhone, and I couldn't get the scrubbing gesture to work for some reason. Does it only work when you're locked in either landscape or portrait orientation? That was the only guess I had. But it wouldn't work at all in COntacts or Messages.
Also, I was trying to change my ringtone in his contacts. I was flicking through the choices instead of tapping, because the Edit Contact screen is so cluttered and has so many fields and buttons. Anyway, when I'd flick to Ringtone, and double tap to activate, nothing happened, even though it made the Activate sound. I think it thought I was clicking on the scroll bar, not on the item. My phone has done this a few times as well.
Any suggestions on either of these? Thanks!

That's kinda weird. Never had such problems. What OS are you running, and what OS is your friend running? Upgrade both to 5.0 and see if it clears up.

That is to activate the back button at top left of the screen. I rarely use it as I just double tap that back button but that is what it's for.
